Some Good News: Baltimore’s Job Growth Outlook

By: Myles, January 18th, 2009

The engine of our economy is powered by jobs. That is why we sit on the edge of our seats lately as the Jobs Report is announced by the Government.

It is actually quite simple. Jobs require businesses to lease more space (or maintain their existing leases), and jobs afford employee’s to buy new homes, refinance them and purchase goods and services from commercial real estate holders. Without jobs just about everything financially, stops. And as of late the job picture couldn’t be much worse. Nationally, we are at historic lows.

Here is the good news. The job growth outlook for Baltimore might not be so bad, after all. Some good local/regional news?

Forbes magazine ranked Baltimore No. 7 among a list of the top 10 markets for job growth. Jobs in the following areas have grown:

  • Education,
  • Professional services, and
  • Business services

And, as we all know, Baltimore’s proximity to Washington, D.C., means there are many government contractors around and many commuters who live in Baltimore but work in the nation’s capital.

So who was ranked 1st? The answe is Madison, Wis., followed by Washington, D.C. No bad … D.C. and Baltimore ranked 2nd and 7th respectfully. That surely is a very strong indicator for our area.

Finally, something go to write about ….
